I received truly heart-breaking news this morning. Bill Cahir, a Democratic opponent in the 5th Congressional District race last year, was killed while serving in Afghanistan Thursday.
Details may be found in the news link at the bottom of this post. I just want to say a personal word. In my opinion, Bill Cahir (pronounced “care”) was the most qualified and conservative of the three Democrats in the primary. He was well-spoken and conducted both himself and his campaign with dignity. He was a Marine Reservist who served two tours in Iraq, and was currently serving in Afghanistan when he was killed by enemy fire in an area of heavy resistance. This was a truly decent and honorable man, who had to obtain special waivers to enlist with the Marines because he was over the age limit, but he did it because he believed it was the right thing for his country after 9/11.
I am deeply saddened by this loss. Our country lost a valiant and noble man. I am sure that the loss to his family and friends is unspeakable.
His wife, Rene, is expecting twins. Please join me in praying for the Cahir family.
